R-modes in Accreting and Young Neutron Stars

چکیده

Recent work has raised the exciting possibility that r-mode pulsations (Rossby waves) in rotating neutron star cores may be strong gravitational wave sources. Rapidly rotating young neutron stars born in supernovae enter the r-mode instability region within the first minutes of their lives and may spin down by substantial amounts due to gravitational radiation from r-modes. Accreting neutron stars in low-mass Xray binaries (LMXBs) are spun up by accretion to such short rotation periods that they may be unstable to r-mode pulsations as well. Gravitational waves from these neutron stars are strong enough to be detectable by second-generation, "enhanced" gravitational wave interferometers. I review the recent progress in understanding the r-mode instability in young and accreting neutron stars, with the focus on the issues of the coupling of the pulsations to the crust and nonlinear saturation amplitudes.

The R-mode Instability in Rotating Neutron Stars

In this review we summarize the current understanding of the gravitational-wave driven instability associated with the so-called r-modes in rotating neutron stars. We discuss the nature of the r-modes, the detailed mechanics of the instability and its potential astrophysical significance. In particular we discuss results regarding the spin-evolution of nascent neutron stars, the detectability o...

Strange stars as persistent sources of gravitational waves

We investigate the relevance of the gravitational-wave driven r-mode instability for strange stars. We find that the unstable r-modes affect strange stars in a way that is quite distinct from the neutron star case. For accreting strange stars we show that the onset of r-mode instability does not lead to the thermo-gravitational runaway that is likely to occur in neutron stars. Instead, the stra...

Andersson et al. and Bildsten proposed that the spin of accreting neutron stars is limited by removal of angular momentum by gravitational radiation which increases dramatically with the spin frequency of the star. Both Bildsten and Andersson et al. argued that the r−modes of the neutron star for sufficiently quickly rotating and hot neutron stars will grow due to the emission of gravitational ...

r-Mode Runaway and Rapidly Rotating Neutron Stars.

We present a simple spin-evolution model that predicts that rapidly rotating accreting neutron stars will be confined mainly to a narrow range of spin frequencies: P=1.5-5 ms. This is in agreement with current observations of neutron stars in both the low-mass X-ray binaries and the millisecond radio pulsars. The main ingredients in the model are (1) the instability of r-modes above a critical ...

Instabilities, turbulence, and mixing in the ocean of accreting neutron stars

We consider the stability properties of the ocean of accreting magnetic neutron stars. It turns out that the ocean is always unstable due to the combined influence of the temperature and chemical composition gradients along the surface and of the Hall effect. Both the oscillatory and non-oscillatory modes can be unstable in accreting stars. The oscillatory instability grows on a short timescale...
